FAQ for NRIs

General information only. Bank, provider, regulatory, legal, and tax requirements can change and must be confirmed for each case.

01 What is the difference between an NRE and an NRO account?

At a high level, NRE accounts are generally used for eligible foreign earnings remitted to India, while NRO accounts are generally used to manage income arising in India. Tax treatment, repatriation, documentation, and permitted transactions differ, so the bank must confirm the correct route for your circumstances.

02 Can NRIs invest in Indian mutual funds?

NRIs can access eligible mutual fund routes subject to KYC, FATCA/CRS declarations, bank-account requirements, country-of-residence restrictions, scheme documents, and the relevant provider's acceptance rules.

03 How can I review my Indian portfolio from overseas?

Existing clients can view available portfolio information through the VPR Finmart app or web portal. VPR Finmart can also schedule remote portfolio reviews and periodic updates to discuss holdings, statements, transactions, and documentation.

04 Does VPR Finmart handle repatriation?

VPR Finmart can help organise records, explain the process at a high level, coordinate documentation, and follow up with the authorised bank. The bank approves and executes eligible remittances. A qualified CA may be required for tax forms or certification.

05 How are NRI investments taxed?

Tax treatment can depend on residential status, investment type, holding period, transaction, treaty position, and current law. VPR Finmart can explain product documents at a high level, but personal tax advice and certification should come from a qualified tax professional.

06 What should I do if my residential status changes?

Tell your bank, investment providers, and VPR Finmart promptly. Account type, KYC, FATCA/CRS declarations, communication details, and investment eligibility may need to be updated.
